On Monday 11th February workmen descended on church grounds. Five men in hi-vis vests looking like giant ants wearing hard hats with visors and ear defenders wielding electrical cutting equipment brought down the diseased horse chestnut tree.
In a matter of hours all that was left was a stump. The branches were loaded onto the pick up truck which was backed into the park gates whilst the giant trunk was cut into sections and manoeuvred by a mechanical grab onto a log trailer which was parked on the pavement in Castle Avenue. This way the work was contained in the church property with minimal disruption to traffic.
The stump was levelled next day.
