The Church Gardens have been receiving a lot of attention from the professional gardeners, Uddingston Pride volunteers and the tree experts. The remainder of the branch which broke off the Sycamore in the high winds at the front of the church has been removed which gives the tree a much better appearance.
In the Wildlife Garden the experts lifted the canopy of the Lime trees behind the store, the Sitka spruce on Old Glasgow Road side and the Cypress tree in the middle. So much more light has been brought in which should allow us to grow more plants to encourage wildlife. Although I know that plants all vary in where they thrive best and that trees are plants, I’ve never considered their differences. Robert who was in charge of the tree work explained that some trees have brittle wood and some produce fibrous wood and that even when trees are removed the roots have different characteristics. He even identified immediately the species of tree trunk slice we have stored in the church from a photo on my phone.
We were delighted that the wood removed was chipped and this week we spread out the chips to make a path and transported some to the compost area, some plants have been buried so it will be interesting to see how many make it through in the next growing season. We are hopeful that the gardens will be enjoyed by all for the rest of the summer and into the autumn.
